The Baltic Sea Anomaly is the second episode of Season 2, and the twenty-eighth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

"Is the Baltic Sea anomaly really a UFO that crashed into the ocean 600 years ago? Ant thinks it is. But what the Nektons find inside is even more strange and frightening."

Plot[]

On the Aronnax, Ant (rather overdramatically) brings the Ephemychron to bridge where it is placed on pedestal over a table where the Nektons can easily look at its map. Upon examining the map, Ant spots a symbol over the exact location of where the Baltic Sea Anomaly is located, a site which Ant has wanted to visit forever because he believes it to be a crashed alien spaceship.

Since the Ephemychron regards the location as important, the Nektons and Nereus decide to investigate. Upon arriving at the site, they locate the Anomaly which appears as an unnatural looking shape near the edge of a cliff. Ant, Fontaine, and Kaiko, take the Shadow, Swamp, and White Knight's out respectively to get a closer look while Will and Nereus stay behind. As they reach the Anomaly, all three Knight's suddenly loose power are left dead in the water, having entered some kind of dead-zone that disables their communications rendering them unable to talk to each other. The Aronnax then also enters a dead-zone which knocks out all its power too. As Will and Nereus wait for the current to move them out of the dead-zone, Nereus remembers reading a passage in the Chronicle of the Deep, which tells of a star that fell from the sky which changed direction several times before crashing into the sea, hinting the Anomoly could be that "star".

Ant, Fontaine, and Kaiko, exit their Knight's and are able to swim out of the dead-zone around them, regaining communication with each other but still being cut off from the Aronnax. They continue exploring the Anomaly and discover several holes emitting a green glow from inside the Anomaly, with the holes on the underside being much bigger. Ant and Kaiko swim into one of them and while inside, Ant finds a small cube shaped object that he is able to activate which causes it to emit a green light that originates from some unknown power source. Suddenly they hear a stirring from further inside the Anomaly and leave quickly. A hoard of over sized Mantis Shrimp swarm out of the Anomaly and head straight for the Aronnax!

Revealed to the source of the light from the Anomaly, the Shrimp begin pecking at the Aronnax causing the windows on the bridge to start breaking. Will activates the shields but it does little to stop them. Kaiko and the others manage to regain communications with Will and she tells him to turn off the lights, believing the Shrimp to be attracted to them. Will does so but the Shrimp continue attacking. Because Mantis Shrimp eyesight is the better than any other creature (allowing them to see beyond ultra-violet), Ant realizes the Shrimp can also see electrical fields generated from any electrical device. Nereus starts turning off anything electrical on the Aronnax while Will takes the Mag Knight out try and stop the Shrimp. Will uses the remote mapping pingers as bate, they work but the Shrimp eat through them quick and chase down Will. The Mag Knight is swarmed and is seriously damaged by the Shrimp leaving Will trapped inside!

Ant swims back to the Shadow Knight and is able to activate it, the light it emits draws the Shrimp towards him, away from Will. Unable to eject from the Mag Knight, Kaiko lowers a line to Fontaine who attaches it to the Mag Knight and together Kaiko and Nereus reel the Knight back in manually with a winch. Ant continues distracting the Shrimp until he manuevers the Shadow Knight into a dead zone witch knocks out his power and makes the Shrimp lose interest. Just as it seems their in the clear, Nereus slips trying to help Will and accidentally turns on the moon pool lights when he grabs a panel to steady himself. This attracts the Shrimp who start attacking the moon pool door. Ant uses the only other power source he has which is the strange cube he found in the Anomaly. When he activates it, the Shrimp head right for him. Though hesitant to give up what he thinks is alien life, Ant throws the cube back into the Anomaly and the Shrimp follow suite.

With the danger gone, the Nektons retrieve the Knight's and flee the area. On the bridge, Ant theorizes that the Shrimp were attracted to strange energy in the "spaceship" causing them to grow bigger as they dug deeper into it. Ant then sees several other symbols on the Ephemychron map just like the one marking the Anomaly. According to the Chronicle they all represent objects that "fell from the sky", meaning there could be other evidence of aliens to be discovered.
