Strange Migration is the twenty-second episode of Season 1, and the twenty-second episode overall.

Synopsis[]

"The Rover is swallowed by a huge, supposedly extinct prehistoric shark - a megalodon! Will and Fontaine manage to cling to its gills just inside its mouth. Kaiko and Ant frantically try to free them - they can't hold on forever."

Plot[]

The Nektons receive a call from Commander Pyrosome who is looking for Kaiko specifically. Pyrosome informs them that they've been tracking a cluster of marine life all traveling together in one group at great speed. The group is made up of creatures that have nothing in common with one another. Additionally, many of the animals being tracked are incapable of moving at such speeds. Puzzled by this event, the Nektons set course for the group to investigate.

The Nektons track the group heading towards a commercial tuna farm. As they continue they encounter a dirt cloud caused by some unknown force churning up the water. The cloud reduces their visibility greatly. The radar shows the group moving towards the pockets of tuna in the farm but instead of eating them, the tuna appear to just join up with the group and continue with it. Suddenly the Nektons run into several torn up fishing nets. Despite Kaiko's attempts to avoid them the propeller becomes jammed by one of the nets. After freeing the engine, the Nektons receive another call from Pyrosome who informs them that another cluster of various sea creatures has appeared about 20 miles from their position. Will and Fontaine take the Rover to continue following the original group while Kaiko and Ant take the Aronnax towards the second group. The original group starts diving fast towards depths that many creatures in the group couldn't possibly survive at. As Will and Fontaine continue their pursuit the group suddenly turns around and heads straight towards the Rover. A solid object appears on radar, just as a massive shape emerges into the Rover's view, which turns out to be a purple Megalodon shark! Unable to get away in time, the Rover is swallowed by the Megalodon.

Will and Fontaine manage to hold on to the Megalodon's gills with the Rover arms but are unable to get out of the mouth with the constant stream of water pushing against them. Ant and Kaiko return in an attempt to rescue them. Upon encountering the Megalodon it quickly swims away from them seeing the Aronnax as a rival. As Kaiko pursues it Ant does some research and discovers that the megalodon should've been extinct for at least 2.6 million years and that its closest living relative is the great white shark. Ant remembers that great whites have to keep moving forward breath and realizes the water flow isn't going to stop, making it impossible for Will and Fontaine to force their way out. Ant comes up with a plan to stop the Megalodon by having the Aronnax come at it head on and then blast it with the lights at the last moment, disorientating the shark long enough for the Rover to get out. Kaiko moves towards the shark but before they reach it the second group they were tracking appears on sonar behind them. It is revealed to be a second yellow Megalodon that knocks the Aronnax off course, missing the first shark.

Kaiko comes up with a new plan to use a steel cable to stop the Megalodon by looping it around its tail and reversing course. Ant realizes they need a Knight for the task and Kaiko, despite objecting at first, allows Ant to go out in the Mag Knight after he points that she is better piloting the Aronnax than he is. After missing his target at first and a close call with the second Megalodon, Ant successfully gets the cable around the shark and Kaiko brings it to a stop allowing Will and Fontaine to escape, but before they can return the purple Megalodon starts pulling the Aronnax along with it. Kaiko is unable to release the cables and so Will and Fontaine attempt to use the Rover's laser to cut the cable. They magnetically attach the Rover to the Aronnax's hull but are just out of reach of the cable. Ant (who been distracting the yellow Megalodon) realizes a way to break the cable and tells Kaiko to go full throttle to get it nice and tight, Ant then positions himself over the cable and lures the yellow Megalodon towards him then pulls out at the last moment as the shark bites the cable in two, freeing the Aronnax.

With everyone safely onboard, the Nektons inform Pyrosome of their discovery and point out the Megalodon likely stay in secluded areas preventing them from being discovered before. After their call Will notes that they have to be ready in case they encounter them again, and stay out of their way.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first time Ant operates the Mag Knight.
  • When Kaiko sees the first Megalodon, she estimates that the animal is about 40 meters long. This would have been larger than a blue whale (which averages about 33 meters) and much larger than a Megalodon was in real life, as the species was about 16-20 meters in length
