Mermaids is the third episode of Season 2, and the twenty-ninth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
"Mermaids don't exist, right? Well, if that's true, then what's that mermaid-shaped thing swimming outside the Aronnax? Ant is determined to find out, even when pirates get in his way."
Plot[]
While reading in his room, Ant sees something swimming outside his window that he believes to be a mermaid. He tries to describe it to Will and Kaiko (who did not see it). In actuality, it is Fontaine playing a prank on Ant while she is testing a brand new Knight called the Mimic Knight, a suit that resembles a mermaid. Also with her is Professor Fiction in the Rover. They test the Mimic Knight's speed and agility and its ability to blend in with dolphins, however it still requires some fine tuning as a glitch nearly causes Fontaine crash into a rock. The two move back to the Aronnax, but before they reach it they are intercepted by the Dark Orca!
Hammerhead's crew capture both of them but Fiction is able to get a partial distress signal out to the Aronnax before being cut off. On the Orca, Hammerhead realizes who Fiction is and demands he build him a "Super Knight" which he plans to use to search the wreck of submarine which has a treasure that he's been wanting to retrieve but been unable to explore previously (among other things). Despite the crude and impractical design he has for the Super Knight (such as a flamethrower), Fiction is given little choice but to build it for him after he threatens Fontaine's safety. With only scrap metal to work with, Fiction gets to work.
Knowing that there is not enough time to build the Knight on his own, Fiction is able to convince Finn to let Fontaine help him (even though he knows it still won't work). With Fontaine out of the Mimic Knight, Mad Madeline, who's been trying to get Fontaine out of it and use it herself up to this point because of her love of mermaids, takes it for herself to play with outside. Meanwhile, Ant and Will are searching for the Rover with two of the other Knights when Ant spots Madeline in the Mimic Knight and gives chase, believing it's actually the mermaid he saw earlier. It isn't until they almost crash into each other that Ant discovers it's actually Madeline. Madeline then comes across the same submarine wreck mentioned earlier by Hammerhead and decides to try and scare Ant who's been following her, but as Ant examines the wreck himself, the Mimic Knight malfunctions again causing Madeline to crash head-on into Ant. Kaiko sees this from Ant's camera before it cuts out and informs Will.
Ant and Madeline are recovered by the Dark Orca, where Hammerhead shows off his now complete, though very glitch-prone, Super Knight. Fontaine then proposes to Hammerhead that she retrieve the treasure herself using the Mimic Knight in exchange for letting her and the others free, claiming that it's unlikely the Super Knight will do the task without incident, Hammerhead reluctantly agrees. Fontaine successfully retrieves the treasure, which turns out be a small box, from the wreck but is double-crossed by Hammerhead who plans to keep Fiction with him and take the treasure from her using the Super Knight. Before he act though he is confronted by Will and Kaiko in the White Knight and Swamp Knight respectively who were able to locate them after detecting Fontaine's radio. Fontaine tries to just give the box to Hammerhead but the Mimic Knight malfunctions again causing her to swim out of control.
Chaos ensues as Hammerhead tries to catch Fontaine while having to fight Will and Kaiko at the same time. Following instructions from the Professor, Ant is able to relay instructions to Fontaine on how to regain control of the Mimic Knight while he also tries to stop Hammerhead with the Shadow Knight. Initially the Super Knight's strength gives Hammerhead the upper hand but one of the arms suddenly glitches and damages his cockpit window causing the Super Knight to rapidly flood and sink. Ant, Will, and Kaiko try to save him but even all three are unable to lift the Super Knight to safety. Having regained control of the Mimic Knight, Fontaine then joins in with a bunch of dolphins and together they create a whirl pool that is able to lift Hammerhead back into the Dark Orca. Fontaine then gives him the box and they leave without further incident.
Back on the Aronnax, as Fontaine puts the Mimic Knight away she explains to Ant that Hammerhead knew about the treasure because the sunken sub used to be his. On the Dark Orca, Hammerhead gives the box to Madeline who opens it to reveal an old picture of her and her mother wearing mermaid costumes that her mother made herself. Hammerhead gives it to her as a birthday present, only for Madeline to tell him that her birthday is next month. Later, Ant is reading when the Mimic Knight swims past his window again. At first, he thinks it's just Fontaine trying to prank him again but when she shows up at his door Ant jumps out and thinks it was a real mermaid this time, only for it to actually be Will in the Mimic Knight.
