Kenji's Monster is the fifth episode of Season 2and the thirty-first episode overall.
Synopsis[]
"A giant, upright creature, straight out of a monster movie, is walking across the ocean floor, causing havoc. Kaiko knows this isn't a normal sea creature. But what is it? And how can it be stopped?"
Plot[]
Somewhere in the eastern Pacific Ocean, a cargo ship collides with a massive unknown creature during the middle of the night, knocking it off course. One of the crewmen captures video of the beast as it moves away. On the Aronnax, Ant reviews the footage and believes the creature to be a Kaiju, the Japanese word for "monster"!
The Nektons investigate the sighting to determine what the creature is and why it's disrupting shipping. Ant's claims of the creature being a Kaiju are continuously dismissed by the rest of his family. The Aronnax picks up the creature's trail, finding crushed boulders and large three-toed footprints on the sea floor. Ant and Fontaine take the Shadow and Mimic Knight out to get a closer look but are suddenly swarmed by a pod of scared whales, which almost hit them and the Aronnax. After Ant and Fontaine return, the radar picks up another creature. To their shock, the creature turns out to look exactly like a Kajiu Ant has been describing, a massive bipedal dinosaur-like creature with long arms, sharp teeth, and thick spikes running down its back. The Kaiju spots the Aronnax and attacks it by throwing a boulder at it and attempting to shoot it with its "atomic fire breath" (later revealed to be just a harmless beam of light). Kaiko is forced to reverse into a rock to avoid being hit by it, damaging the rudder. The Nektons determine that if the Kaiju continues on its present path, it will end up at the island of Hachijo-Kojima, where their friend Kenji lives!
Fontaine and Will take the Rover out to try to slow down the Kaiju while Ant races ahead in the Shadow Knight to warn Kenji, and Kaiko uses the White Knight to repair the rudder. Further predictions show that the Kaiju will walk right into the cave of giant mutated Hermit Crabs, encountered by the Nektons during their last visit to the island. No matter what they try, Kaiju continues heading straight for the island. Ant arrives at the island, but can't find Kenji anywhere. After a brief search, Will tells Ant to come back and help. In actuality, Kenji is in a rowboat far from the shore, where he hears the Kaiju approaching. As Will and Fontaine continue trying to distract the Kaiju, it grabs hold of the Rover and throws it right out of the water, where they end up landing right next to Kenji. When asked why he's out there, Kenji reveals that he created the Kaiju!
Much to Ant's disappointment, Kenji explains that the Kaiju is a machine, a prop he built years ago for a movie called Return of the Atomic Monsters, a sequel to Attack of the Atomic Monsters. The film was never released because nobody liked the ending, and so the Kajiu was put in storage, where it remained until it was somehow reactivated. Furthermore, Kenji explains that the Kaiju is programmed to attack an underwater cave, which is why it's heading towards the Hermit Crabs. Kenji also states that the Crab's cave is a prop made of cement, which will surely be crushed by the machine. With time running out, Kenji agrees to help the Nektons in stopping the machine. Having completed her repairs, Kaiko rejoins the others in the Aronnax. Will and Fontaine race ahead towards the cave to try moving the Crabs away before the Kaiju reaches it. Kaiko tries to stop the Kaiju by wrapping it up with a cable and using the Aronnax to stop it in its tracks. This plan fails when the machine proves to be too strong and breaks the cable. Ant quickly comes up a new plan to use part of the cable as a tripwire between two boulders, which will hopefully destroy the machine, but before he can finish setting it up, Kenji stops him! The Kaiju then hits the wire, yanking Ant and Kenji into its path and almost crushing them beneath its feet.
Will and Fontaine's attempt to help the Crabs goes awry when the Crabs start attacking them, disabling and almost destroying the Rover until the sound of the approaching Kaiju distracts them. Rather than flee, the Crabs confront the Kajiu, but they do little damage against the machine. When Ant asks Kenji why he stopped him, Kenji says that he does not want the machine to be destroyed, having been heartbroken after he realized it would never be seen when the movie was cancelled. He is now awestruck to finally see it in action, but Ant convinces him that living things are more important than machines. Realizing the error of his ways, Kenji apologizes and agrees to help stop the machine by any means necessary. Kaiko takes the Mag Knight out to rescue Will and Fontaine but is knocked out by the giant Cyborg Crab, (the one that had destroyed the previous Rover and now wears the wreckage as a shell), which also throws Will and Fontaine into the path of the Kaiju on its way to confront the machine.
When asked how the Kaiju was originally operated, Kenji says he used a remote control, which he later used parts from to make a new remote he could use for the new curtains in his house. Realizing that this caused the Kaiju to be reactivated in the first place, Ant and Kenji rush back to the house to find the remote, much to Ant's dismay as the Kaiju and Cyborg Crab start fighting. As the two beasts battle, the Kaiju almost steps on the Rover, which is only stopped once Kaiko brings the Mag Knight back online and holds it back, though is getting slowly crushed by the Kaiju's weight. Ant and Kenji find the remote, and after randomly pressing buttons, succeed deactivating the Kaiju, just in time to save the others. With the fight over, the Crabs return to the cave.
Kenji apologizes to the Nektons for causing so much trouble, but they're glad the damage was minimal. As the Nektons return to the Aronnax, Ant looks back to see the now static Kaiju standing on the island and says to himself that he might write a movie about this one day.
