Treacherous Waters is the fourth episode of Season 2, and the thirtieth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

"The Nektons enter an area of the Bermuda Triangle where the laws of physics don't seem to apply. What's more, they can't escape! Can it be that Jeffrey has to save the day?"

Plot[]

The Aronnax enters the Bermuda Triangle where the Nektons hope to discover the meaning of a Lemurian symbol marked by the Ephemychron. Unbeknownst to them, they are being followed by Alpheus and Proteus, whose search for Lemuria has lead them to the same area. Suddenly the Nektons encounter a large blob-like creature off the port side only for it to disappear through some kind of rift. Unable to stop in time the Aronnax's momentum carries it through the rift as well. Alpheus and Proteus witness this and A.R.I.A reports that the Aronnax has seemed to cease to exist.

The Aronnax emerges on the other side of the rift and the Nektons find themselves in an otherworldly environment where they encounter more blob creatures. Most systems on the Aronnax stop working including the clock making it appear as thought time is frozen. Kaiko attempts to reverse course and surface but both fail despite the engines and ballast working normally, leading Ant to believe that they aren't even in water any more. Ant, Fontaine, and Will take the Knights out to investigate further but are tethered to the Aronnax for safety. Outside they discover that perspective is somehow warped making them appear very far away from each other and that time isn't frozen, just incredibly slow. Kaiko then realizes that the blob creatures are actually tardigrades which are known for being the toughest organisms on the planet, capable of surviving in any environment, even the vacuum of space, however they're supposed to be microscopic in size yet the ones here are huge. Kaiko then hears a loud creaking sound and orders everyone back inside, but before Ant can return he finds himself face to face with Alpheus whose followed them through the rift.

With his sub seemingly still working, Alpheus taunts Ant only for his sub to also start developing large creaking sounds. Alpheus then leaves Ant and Ant returns to the Aronnax. Because Alpheus's sub is jet powered Ant deduces that jets work in this environment but propellers don't. Later Ant realizes Jeffrey (who's been swimming upside down since they entered the rift) is behaving similarly to the tardigrades, believing they are tuned into something. Ant thinks that by turning the Aronnax upside down they'll tune in too. Using the jet powered maneuvering thrusters, Kaiko flips the Aronnax and many systems then come back online. They then spot the remains of an ancient ship that looks Lemurian but it appears to have been ripped apart from the inside. By now the creaking noises have intensified and its then that Kaiko realizes that some unknown force is causing the hull to expand until it will pull the Aronnax apart like the Lemurian ship.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first and only episode to be written by Ray Boseley.
  • The episode contradicts itself near the end when Will is unable to pull the Aronnax himself despite Jeffrey in a vehicle with way less power doing so shortly before.
  • This episode is based on the real life mystery of the Bermuda Triangle located in the North Atlantic Ocean, although it is unknown what really happens in the triangle.
